第四回 学びの方向
時は進み、彼は東京渋谷にある都立広尾高校・普通科に入学する。
高校１年に「小型船舶操縦士4級」、次いで高校3年「小型船舶操縦士1級」を取得する。
共に最年少枠での合格となった。
大学進学にあたり、彼は迷うことなく海洋学科のある大学を選択する。
水産大学(現・海洋大学)・NUBS（日本大学生物資源科学部）その二つが候補だ。
海は一つの環境要素、つまり山があり湖があり、そこから流れる川があり、そして陸が形成され、雨が降りまた山に川が流れる。
循環しているからこそ成り立つのが生態系である。
そう考えてみれば、海・魚だけ一つ勉強するのは如何なものか・・という結論に達し選択したのがNUBSであった。
ここには、専攻したMSR（海洋生物資源科学科）以外に森林・河川を専門とする11学科が存在し、“環境を俯瞰する視点”を学習する上で非常に優位性があった。
MSRの中でも学習分野は多岐に渡る。
微生物・魚介類・鯨類・海獣類といった生物学的視点、海・川・海流・潮汐といった地学的視点、タンパク質・脂質・死後硬直・増肉係数といった機能応用学的視点、海洋法・領土・海底資源といった海洋法規的視点・・・幅広い専攻をする過程で彼が一番興味を持った分野は「漁業学」分野であった。
そして、ここでの視座が彼にとっての3つ目の出会いを創る。
Episode 4. The direction to learn.

Then time passed, and I entered Hiroo high school.
When I was in the first grade of high school (15 years old), I got a 4th class small vessel license, and when I was in 3rd year of high school I got a 1st class small vessel license.
I’d passed both exams for the youth category.
Without hesitation I chose a university which has a Marine Biology program.
There were two options that I was interested in: “Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology” or “Nihon University of Bioresource Sciences (NUBS)”.
The sea is one environmental element: There are mountains, lakes and rivers that flow from them, land is formed, it rains and rivers flow into the mountains again.
Ecosystems are circulating and together forming the environment.
Thinking so, I felt there would be something insufficient with studying only the sea or fish, so in the end, I chose NUBS.
NUBS has 11 departments, including my major “Marine Sciences Resources (MSR)”, specializations in forests and rivers, etc.
It is a great advantage for learning things from a bird’s-eye view.
MSR covered a lot of ground to learn.
Biological viewpoints such as microorganisms, seafood, whales, and marine animals; Geological viewpoints such as the sea, rivers, the ocean, currents and tides; functional application viewpoints such as proteins, fat, postmortem rigidity and thickening coefficients; and oceanic legal perspectives such as the law of the sea, territory and submarine resources.
In the process of learning a wide range of majors, I was most interested in is the “Fisheries science” field.
And the perspective here created a third encounter for me.
